The city of Sukhum is the center and capital of the currently recognized Russian Republic of Abkhazia. This settlement on the Black Sea coast received the city status in 1848, and according to the data of 2011, 64, 478 thousand people lived in Sukhum (Sukhum and Sukhum residents).

The distance from Sukhum to the Russian border is 107 kilometers. The city is located literally on the Black Sea coast, and on the other side it is surrounded by the picturesque mountains of the Caucasus. Several mountain streams flow right through the center of Sukhum - Basla or Besletka, Sukhumka, as well as the Kyalasur river.
The city is located in a humid and subtropical climate zone with an average annual temperature of +17 degrees Celsius. There is practically no snow here, but torrential tropical rains in the summer are quite common.

How to get to Sukhum
Unfortunately, at present, the city airport, which was small and badly damaged after the war, does not yet accept civil aircraft. Therefore, if you decide to save time, then you will need to first fly to the port of Sochi, and from there go to the Abkhaz capital by taxi or shuttle bus.
A road to Sukhum by rail is also possible. So from Moscow (Kurskiy station) to the capital of Abkhazia there is train number 305C, and the travel time will be 43:55 hours. Other ways to get to the city by rail are first from your city to the final destination in Adler, then by bus to the Russian-Abkhaz border in Psou, and then by minibus or bus to the central Sukhumi market. But this method also has its drawbacks - it often happens that the passage of customs control at the border takes several hours. This is especially true for the summer time, when streams of Russian tourists literally flock to Abkhazia.
If you prefer to travel by your own car, then you should know that the distance from Moscow to Sukhum is approximately 1800 kilometers, which will run through Tula, Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don and Krasnodar. First, from the Russian capital, you should go to the Kashirskoye highway, after which you should take the M4 highway leading to the Rostov region, then you should exit onto the M27 and so on to Sochi and the Psou checkpoint. Unfortunately, a car pass to the territory of Abkhazia is usually even more loaded than a regular one on foot, so you should prepare in advance for a long waiting time. The distance from Sukhum to the northern capital is 2500 kilometers, first along the Moscow highway, then along the M10 highway and the Leningradskoye highway, and then from Moscow along the route described above.
