The Kingdom of the Netherlands is located in Western Europe and the Caribbean. The European part of the country is one of the most populated areas in the world, as there are no vast forests and unexplored lands in Holland.
Where are the different parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
Holland (as the Netherlands is often called in Russia) is a Western European state, which is surrounded by water on almost all sides. The country is located in the western part of the Central European Plain.
The Netherlands is washed by the North Sea, and some of the islands that make up the kingdom are located quite far from the European part - in the Caribbean Sea. Because of this, the islands of Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius are called the Caribbean Netherlands. Do not forget about the islands of Arubo, Curacao and Sint Martin, they are also part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but have the status of self-governing regions.
Netherlands or Holland
Difficulties in understanding where Holland is located are added by the fact that the state itself is correctly called the Netherlands. Holland (South and North) are the two most developed and well-known provinces of the kingdom outside the state, there are 12 of them in total. In Russia, the popular name of this country came after the visit to this state of Peter I.
Like the rest of the Netherlands, Holland is located on flat territories, in the areas washed by the North Sea, dunes and polders prevail. A belt of sand dunes stretches along the seashore, which has a height of 60 meters and a width of up to 405 meters.
Due to the specific location of their country, the inhabitants of Holland had to “take away” the land belonging to them by the sea for centuries. To protect the land, they built dams. More than half of the kingdom is below sea level. Only the province of Lumburg, located in the southeast, has small hills on its territory that rise 150-320 meters, the highest part of the Netherlands, the Waalserberg Upland (321 meters), is also located there.
The lowest lands are in the west and north of the kingdom, most of them lie in the deltas of the Meuse, Rhine and Scheldt rivers. In addition to the southernmost province of the kingdom - Limburg above sea level, there is part of the territory of Holland in the east and south. The southern part mainly consists of sandy-clay plains, smoothly turning into hilly-forest areas of the foothills of the Ardennes.
The regions of Holland lying to the east occupy a hilly plain called the guestos, which is formed by glacial deposits. The moraine relief is preserved to the southeast of the IJsselmeer, the ridges are up to 106 meters high.
The capital of the Netherlands - Amsterdam is located in a swampy area on the Amstel River, from which the city's name originated. In addition to seas and swamps, the hydrography of Holland is characterized by the presence of lakes, estuaries and river branches connected into numerous channels (Amsterdam Rhine, Gent Ternusen, Corbulo, Nordsee Canal and Juliana).
