One of the favorite attractions of the guests and the residents of Crimea themselves is the Nikitsky Botanical Garden. And one of his most spectacular annual exhibitions is the Tulip Parade. This magnificent sight in the ancient 200-year-old garden, which is located near the Crimean Yalta, occurs only once a year.

Foundation of the Nikitsky Botanical Garden

Emperor Alexander I signed a decree on June 10, 1811 establishing a state botanical garden in the Yalta region. The initiator of its creation was the then Kherson military governor and mayor of Odessa, Russian French, Duke Armand Emmanuel de Richelieu - great-great-great-nephew of the famous Cardinal Richelieu.

Emmanuel Osipovich Richelieu ruled the Novorossiysk Territory, which included the Tauride Governorate, from 1803 to 1814. He, as they would say in our time, was an active and effective government administrator. This did not stop him from adoring flowers and loving ornamental plants. The result of the combination of "lyricism and physics" in this man was the decision on the need to form a botanical nursery in Crimea for the study and reproduction of plants, transformation and decoration not only of the peninsula itself, but of the entire south of Russia.

This is how the first southern botanical garden in the state appeared near the village of Nikitka.

The embodiment of Richelieu's idea was entrusted to Christian Christianovich Steven. The conceived business was successfully embodied by the painstaking work of the scientist and the staff of the garden, replacing each other for two centuries. In memory of the first leader and one of the founders, a bust was erected on the territory of the botanical garden.

In the list of scientific work of the garden there is a very beautiful direction - the selection and collecting of tulips. By 2019, there are 506 varieties in the collection! Part of the extensive collection can be seen at a time.

Every spring in Nikitsky Garden there is a magical event - "Tulip Parade". A large sunny meadow is planted with flower beds of 100,000 bulbs of a variety of tulips, which create a chic patterned carpet. On it flaunts the newest breeding flowers, as well as varieties that were bred at the beginning of the 20th century.

Tulip bloom takes place approximately from late March to mid-May with a possible time shift depending on the weather. Some types of tulips fade, the next bloom. Thus, at the parade, they manage to show half of the tulips from the entire garden collection.

Visitors revel in the sight of flowers that are stunning in their variety of shapes and colors. Tulips are sometimes like roses, sometimes peonies, sometimes they are trimmed with fur, sometimes strict and laconic in shape, sometimes striped, sometimes delicate colors, sometimes catchy and bright. In the Crimean sun, all this abundance shines and deservedly delights not only impressionable ladies, but restrained men. By the way, bright, colorful photographs are obtained against the background of flowers and the surrounding mountain landscape.
