Penza is a city in the Volga region, which is the administrative center of the region of the same name. It was founded in 1663, and as of the beginning of 2014, the population of Penza was 521, 329 thousand people, which made this city the 34th most populous city in Russia and 86th in all of Europe.

This Volga city is located in the central part of the European territory of Russia, on the Volga Upland and in the southeast direction from the Russian capital. The area of the city territory is 304.7 square kilometers. The Sura River flows through the territory of Penza. The length of the latter is 19 kilometers from north to south and 25 kilometers from west to east.
