India, one of the oldest countries in the world, keeps many secrets and mysteries. The mild climate, rich history and popular resorts attract tourists from all over the world. One of the places that combines all these qualities is Humpi.
The proud capital of the Vijyanagara Empire was once founded on the site of an ancient settlement. However, two centuries later, it was destroyed by Islamic conquerors. These ancient ruins, where the village of Hampi is located, is now a popular pilgrimage site for travelers. Hampi is located in the state of Karnataka, just five hours from Goa (the nearest airport).
How to get there
An exciting journey from Goa to Hampi can be done in several ways, for every taste and budget. First, a bus tour, which can be purchased from both the tour operator and local travel agencies. Various types of routes, comfortable transport and professional guides will not let you get bored during the trip and more than compensate for the amount of money spent. If you are used to freedom of movement and want to take your time to get to know all the sights, it is best to get to Hampi on your own. You can take a taxi or a scooter. If you are attracted by the local flavor and extreme conditions, you can take the train to Hospet (the nearest taluki) and hire a rickshaw. It is much cheaper, and besides, it allows you to see all the beauties of the town at your own pace. And there really is something to see.
What to see
In Hampi, there are several active temple complexes that are under the protection of UNESCO. Fantastically beautiful architectural structures are interspersed with natural piles of stones and statues of Hindu gods. Picturesque hills protect the remains of the ancient capital on three sides, and the Tungabhadra River separates old Hampi from the modern settlement. Among the ruins of magnificent palaces and temples, the spirit of the ancient great empire, strict vegetarianism and the cult of Shiva reign. Here he has been worshiped since the 7th century, and the most popular pilgrimage site is the operating Virupaksha temple.
Two kilometers from the center is the Vittala temple, famous for its singing columns, statues of 10 avatars of the god Vishnu and a stone chariot that has become the symbol of Hampi. Islamic culture has also left its mark here - the light and graceful Lotus Palace, which is cool even on the hottest day. On the other side of the river is another miracle of Hampi - the Temple of Hanuman, an ape-like deity. There are 600 white stone steps leading up to this hilltop shrine.
At the top, the most staunch travelers will be greeted by hordes of monkeys, monks who look after them and a magnificent view of the entire city. Most of the hotels, guesthouses and small sheds, dear to the hearts of unpretentious tourists, are located on this coast. Here you can satisfy not only cultural hunger, but also physical one - many different eateries will feed all the suffering. Here you can also enjoy meat dishes. Alcohol is not honored in Hampi, so tired travelers will quench their thirst with tea, juice or weak beer. Food and lodging prices are relatively low, there are fewer tourists than other resorts, and souvenir shops are scattered throughout the village. In the evening, climbing Managa Hill, you will see a strikingly beautiful sunset and realize that the long journey to Hampi was not in vain. This trip will be a journey to a magical land. Or a dream too beautiful to be real.
