Ulyanovsk was founded in 1648 and is located on the right high bank of the Volga River. A wonderful and breathtaking view of the widest part of the river, which reaches forty kilometers, opens from the embankment of this city. Ulyanovsk can rightfully be called a city-museum, which is rich in its sights.
Ulyanovsk is famous for a huge number of museums that should be visited upon arrival in this wonderful city. All museums are organically woven into the architecture and culture of the city, and their history is deeply rooted in the distant past, when collectors and scientists collected and presented cultural and scientific heritage to their native city.
The art and local history museums (celebrated the 110th anniversary of their founding) are the most popular and beloved among the guests and citizens of Ulyanovsk. It presents the history of the Simbirsk region in a collection of rare exhibits, from the very foundation to the present day.
The main attraction of Ulyanovsk and the special pride of this city is the State Historical and Memorial Reserve “The Motherland of V. I. Lenin , which was only twenty years old in 2004. Numerous tourists and residents of the city can be transported for a moment to the nineteenth century of Simbirsk and stroll through the open-air museum.
Ulyanovsk is divided into four main districts: Zheleznodorozhny, Leninsky, Zavolzhsky and Zasviyazhsky. The railway area is located in the southern part of the city and is named after the railway network and the railway station. There is a large forest area called Vinnovskaya Roscha. Having rented an apartment close to this park, you can walk along it and see Oblomov's pavilion, which Goncharov described in his famous novel "The Break".
The Leninsky District can be attributed to the historical part of the city, since it is here that the V. I. Lenin. Its territory I occupies more than one hundred and seventy hectares; houses of the nineteenth century are preserved here. On one street alone, you can visit fourteen museums. If you go upstairs, you will find yourself in the central part of Ulyanovsk - Goncharova Street, where you will be greeted by the Puppet Theater, the Obelisk of Glory and the Goncharov House-Museum.
The Zavolzhsky district is located on the left side of the Volga and can be reached in two ways: by the new "Presidential Bridge" (about 13 kilometers) or by the old "Imperial" (length 3.5 kilometers). This area is the newest, has a huge number of shopping centers and wide avenues. A little further from the residential area, there is an airport and the Aviastar plant, which builds the largest Ruslan planes to date.
In the Zasviyazhsky district there are two main parks - "Black Lake" and "Molodezhny", where you can walk, eat ice cream and sit on a bench in the cool shade of trees. The well-known UAZ plant is located in the same area, if you are interested in the history of the plant, you should visit the Museum of the History and Labor Glory of UAZ OJSC.
If you love nature, visit the vicinity of the village of Undory, this is where the Jurassic Park is located. The land of the paleontological reserve is rich in the remains of fossil fauna (belemnites, cephalopods-ammonites, skeletons of plesiosaurs, sea lizards-ichthyosaurs and pliosaurs). After visiting the museum, walk along the banks of the Volga, swim in the river, collect fossilized shells as a keepsake in memory of Ulyanovsk.
