How was the city of Mirny formed?
The city is a municipal entity "Mirny", it has been assigned the status of a closed administrative territorial entity (ZATO).
The city of Mirny is inhabited mainly by the workers of the Plesetsk cosmodrome. The city of Mirny owes its origin to the beginning of the construction of a secret military town located at the base of ballistic intercontinental missiles.
For the first time, the peaceful city was mentioned in 1987 in the press as a working settlement formed at the cosmodrome, despite the fact that the settlement was located a few kilometers from this city.
Together with the construction of technological facilities in the settlement of Mirny, the construction of cultural and household facilities was carried out. An industrial plant was launched, a canteen was opened, a maternity hospital was built. Military builders erected capital housing for the population.
At first, the name of the village was borrowed from Lake Plestsi, located nearby, which means from the Old Russian language “Lake or the territory of a river between rifts”.
By the decision of the Soviet government, in the fall of 1960, the settlement was transformed into the city of ZATO Mirny, which includes residential neighborhoods, the entire territory of the cosmodrome and forests adjacent to the city on all sides, with an area of 1,752 square kilometers. The city stretches from north to south for more than 46 km, from west to east - for 82 kilometers.
In 2003, the final borders of ZATO Mirny were established by the decree of the President of the Russian Federation.

Municipal formation "Mirny" today has the status of an urban district. Its full name is the city of Mirny in the Arkhangelsk region. The total area of the municipality is 151,979 hectares. The population of the city of Mirny reaches 30 thousand people.
It is a modern green city. It has a well-developed infrastructure: schools, kindergartens, branches of universities, a technical school, an art school, a sports school, cinemas, libraries, a hospital and city polyclinics. The city has a network of retail stores, catering establishments, and a modern covered market.
The city-forming enterprise, as before, is the first cosmodrome in Russia - the 1st GIK of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. This city houses the administration of the cosmodrome, a computing center, several military units, a garrison officers' house and a military hospital.
Day of the city in Mirny is celebrated on July 15.
