This city smells of sea freshness and fish dishes at the same time, it breathes medieval coolness and warmth of colorful streets. Copenhagen cannot be fed up, just as one cannot get tired of freedom, fairy tales and dreams.

Age of Gods and Kings

According to an old legend, a goddess named Gefion made an agreement with the Swedish king that he would give her all the land that she could plow in one night. The goddess, having turned her sons into strong oxen, took up the plow. The next morning, the perplexed king was forced to lose his endless territory - Gefion, having hooked the land with a plow, dragged it into the waters of the Baltic Sea. This is how the island of Zealand was formed, on which the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, was later founded.

Growing out of a village, it was a small port city that outwardly did not stand out in itself as the economic and political center of the state. But everything changed with the accession to the throne of King Christian the Fourth, and everything for which Copenhagen is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world - luxurious palaces, church buildings, grandiose bridges and numerous canals - the capital owes mainly to him.

Copenhagen today

The Danes value their great history very much and try to preserve the spirit of bygone days in the city. Cultural and architectural monuments are under the reliable protection of the municipality, and the number of museums seems to exceed the number of grocery stores.

At the same time, it is customary here to think about tomorrow. For example, wind generators of electricity are located along the entire coast, and the most popular form of transport in the city is a bicycle, which, by the way, can be borrowed for free.

Cycling is also in demand among tourists. This is a great way to get to the main attractions of Copenhagen - the long-suffering Andersen's Little Mermaid, the Tivoli amusement park, the Renaissance model Rosenborg Palace (where the events of the Hamlet tragedy were allegedly unfolded) and the permanent residence of the Amalienborg royal family. It will not be superfluous to stop by the Nyhavn embankment - once a haven for fishermen, and now - a favorite place for artists and musicians.

Or, deftly maneuvering along the bright embankments, completely packed with expensive yachts and ramshackle longboats, you can go to Christiania - an area arbitrarily declared an independent city by the hippies who settled in it. No matter how hard the local authorities tried, it has not been possible to evict the "flower children" from the historic center of Copenhagen for more than half a century. But, in fairness, it should be noted that even despite the tacit permission of soft drugs and the absence of police, Christiania is a fairly clean and safe area.

The small capital of a small country, Copenhagen looks more majestic than many European metropolises, while retaining the coziness of an old fishing harbor and the charm of traditional Scandinavian streets.
