The monument is protected by the state and is a world cultural heritage.

The Potala Palace is a gigantic palace complex with a total area of 360,000 m2. The first building of the ensemble was erected in 637 AD. by order of the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo, which served as the beginning for the further construction and expansion of the complex. The palace was repeatedly burned, destroyed, but invariably restored, rebuilt and altered. In 1645, he acquired the form in which he can be observed by modern people. And in 1994, the Potala palace complex was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The largest palace complex in the world, the Forbidden City, is located in Beijing on an area of more than 730,000 m2.
