Djerba is the warmest resort in Tunisia. An excellent place for beach and water recreation, visiting thalasso centers. There are many factories on the island producing carpets, soap, sponges, and ceramics.
Djerba Island is one of the most southern Mediterranean resort in Tunisia. The temperature here is always several degrees higher than on the continent, so tourists go to rest until the end of October. Coldest weather on the island in January. The air temperature at this time is rarely more than 15 degrees.
In summer, there is practically no rain on the island. It is very hot during the day, but the maritime climate, devoid of high humidity, makes it easy to endure the heat. It is not so hot in September and October, but the sea remains very warm and suitable for swimming.
Djerba is one of the largest off the coast of Africa, but its area is only 512 square meters. km. Therefore, many vacationers decide to go around it entirely. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and a ferry.
The discoverers of the island were the Phoenicians. In the eighth century BC, thanks to them, the beginnings of trade and crafts appeared. Mostly all of Tunisia was inhabited by the tribes of the Berberians. They have retained their identity even now, although they coexist with other nationalities.
How to get to Djerba?
Most tourists get to the island through the Djerba-Zaris airport. There are currently no direct flights from Russia. In the best case, you will have to make one change. The cheapest route is in Munich. There are flights via Paris. During the tourist season, there are direct flights from both cities:
- Royal Flight;
- "Nord Wind";
- Nouvelair Tunisia and some others.
Inexpensive charter flights, but they usually come in conjunction with a travel package.
The airport itself is located in the north-west of the island, 8 km from the administrative center. If you decide to cancel the transfer, it will be more convenient to get to the desired place by taxi.
How to get around the island?
Any place can be reached by regular buses. You need to be prepared for the fact that they are clogged with local residents. An easier way is to use white minibuses. They are designed for 6-8 people, they are sent as soon as they are filled. The cost of this transport will cost about twice as much as the bus.
Traveling around the island and taxis. Usually several cars are on duty in front of each hotel. Payment is made by the counter:
- for landing;
- kilometers;
- expectations.
At night, there is a special rate that is much more expensive than the daytime one. Taxi is a convenient transport, but it has a drawback - you cannot leave the island on it. This can only be done by intercity bus.
Many tourists choose an easier way to get around - a bicycle. There are good roads on the island, and you can rent such transport at any hotel. If you want to move faster around Djerba, but not depend on a guide or buses, you can get a car for rent. The airport has offices of specialized companies. Many of them offer to arrange a deal at a low price or with a minimum set of documents.
Beach vacation
Looking at the map, it may seem that the island is an endless beach. Most of the coastline is represented by silt, clay or a mixture of stones and sand. "Paradise" corner with turquoise sea and fine white sand is located in the north-east of the island. This part contains the maximum number of hotels.
According to the laws of Tunisia, the coastal strip of 30 m belongs to the state. Therefore, in addition to tourists, you can meet local residents on any beach. Most of them do not come for recreation, but to earn money. They offer holidaymakers souvenirs, the opportunity to ride a camel and other services.
Each hotel is responsible for a specific stretch of the beach. Garbage is removed on it, sand is sifted, seaweed is cleared from the sea. The cleanest beaches are in hotels with 4 and 5 stars. Each has its own sun loungers, sun loungers and umbrellas.
There is also an opportunity to do water sports. Take a jet ski or go windsurfing without any problems.
Thalassotherapy
Many come to the island not only for relaxation, but also for the opportunity to put their bodies in order. The hotels have thalasso centers that allow:
- lie down in a Moorish bath;
- undergo an algal wrap;
- enjoy various types of water massages.
The main ones are seawater pools and hammams. The latter help to prepare the skin for the rest of the procedures, to make them more effective. In special pools, water is collected in the pools for 0.5 km from the coast from the depths, heated to the temperature of the human body.
Wraps can also be done at hotels. On the island, special muds are used for them, characterized by a very high concentration of active substances.

One of the favorite tourist spots is the Djerba Explorer Park. On its territory there are:
- Crocodile farm. On it you can see how the crocodiles are fed.
- A stylized classic Heritage village. It consists of buildings of traditional architecture and a residential complex.
- Lella Hadriya Museum. In it you can get acquainted with how the inhabitants of the Ostry used to live, learn about traditional clothes and household utensils.
Not far from Djerba there is an island with flamingos. It is located in the north-west of the resort area of Mezreya. However, large numbers of flamingos themselves can be seen only in late autumn, when most tourists fly away. In summer, birds rarely come here because of too much noise.
Many excursion packages include a visit to the ancient synagogue of El-Griba. It is located seven kilometers from Houmt-Suk in a Jewish settlement. The Jewish shrine is one of the oldest - it was built in the sixth century BC. Its last restoration took place in 1920. The construction of the synagogue is shrouded in a lot of secrets and legends.
No matter which part of Djerba you are staying in, be sure to visit the island's capital, Houmt Souk. The city has many attractions and interesting places. There is an authentic souvenir and jewelry market in the center. Walking along the streets, you can see three majestic mosques or walk to the fort, erected in 1284.
Many people buy carpets before returning home. Tourists recommend purchasing local wines. The French colonialists instilled a taste for fine drinks. Many of them are made from dates. If you want to bring a present to a loved one, buy a melhaf (a traditional orange striped blanket) at the bazaar.
