Sakhalin is an island in the Sea of Okhotsk. It got its name from a typo on the map and was not subsequently renamed. Any tourist will find here what is so lacking in big and bustling cities - solitude and a feeling of complete harmony with the surrounding world.

Nature has generously endowed this corner of Russia with many amazing and beautiful places. The flora and fauna of Sakhalin have a huge number of rare representatives. Most of them are listed in the Sakhalin Red Book. Moreover, a third of the species of the Red Data Book of Russia can be found on this island.
There are several groups of volcanoes here. They were named after famous and great people of Russia. These are, for example, the volcano of Ivan the Terrible, Bogdan Khmelnitsky, Baransky, Mendeleev.
There are many thermal springs, mud volcanoes, fumarole fields on the island. A breathtaking view opens up in winter at many waterfalls - frozen jets form intricate pictures.

The history of the island is unique in that it has preserved its Japanese heritage. On Sakhalin you can see the amber coast, temples and temple complexes of Japan, a Japanese lighthouse and much more that has been preserved in the villages of the island from Japanese culture.
The Russian historical heritage of the island is primarily associated with the places for convicts. It is no secret that convicted people were sent to the most difficult jobs. And Sakhalin was one of those places. A local history museum has been created here on this topic.
On the island, the writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is loved and revered. He discovered the island in a new way, and thanks to his numerous notes and books, Nicholas II allowed everyone to freely visit the island. He even opened a literary museum in Aleksandrovka.
Here you can find very ancient fossils, some of them over 500 million years old.
The 1945 war and the 50th parallel are a special page in the history of the island. In August 1945, the island was completely liberated from Japanese troops. Afterwards, monuments to the fallen soldiers were erected in the battlefield.
The island has many natural attractions: Cape Krillon, Lake Tunaicha, Moneron Island, Mount Vaida, Zhdanko ridge.
Kitchen
On Sakhalin you can find dishes of all cuisines, but the most common and favorite are Russian, Japanese and Korean cuisines.
Russian cuisine is familiar to many. Common dishes of Sakhalin residents include fried herring, dried fried smelt, and flounder. Crabs and shrimps are cooked here exclusively in sea water.
Korean cuisine is similar to Russian in taste. Kimchi is especially loved here. This is Chinese cabbage, fermented with garlic and paprika. Very popular pork kimchi stewed together. Fern of various types is harvested in spring. Very often, a variety of broths with noodles, meat, seafood and vegetables are prepared. They call it kuksu.
