Step 1
Travel to Sakhalin by plane. This is the fastest and most convenient way to get to the island directly. From Moscow, flights to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the administrative center of the island, are operated by Aeroflot and Rossiya from Sheremetyevo and Transaero from Domodedovo. Choose from five flights a day. Travel time from 8 hours 15 minutes to 9 hours. There are Transaero flights from St. Petersburg, check the timetable, as planes fly extremely rarely. Step 2
Buy a train ticket to Khabarovsk. You can leave Moscow from the Yaroslavsky railway station by two trains: Moscow - Khabarovsk and Moscow - Vladivostok. The travel time is from 131 hours, the cost of a reserved seat ticket is from 4 800 rubles. In Khabarovsk, take a train to Vanino station (Khabarovsk - Sovetskaya Gavan train). The travel time will be about 1 day, the ticket price is from 754 rubles for a reserved seat. In the port of Vanino, buy a passenger ticket for the Sakhalin ferry. The sea route will take 14 hours, the ticket price is from 1,500 rubles. You can get to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk from Kholmsk by bus or fixed-route taxi. Step 3
Try to get to the port of Vanino by road. The route from Moscow will be as follows: Kazan - Ufa - Kurgan - Omsk - Kemerovo - Krasnoyarsk - Irkutsk - Chita - Blagoveshchensk - Khabarovsk. There is a road from Khabarovsk to Vanino through Lidoga, this section of the road is 509 km. It is difficult to calculate the total time spent on the road. In Vanino, take a ferry, buy a ticket for yourself and your vehicle.
