Everyone, even the most experienced mushroom picker, can get lost in the forest. Always take your mobile phone with you, have matches, a knife, and water with you. Wear brightly colored clothing. You are unlikely to get lost if you have a modern GPS receiver with you. However, there are a number of techniques that will help you avoid an unpleasant situation in the forest when you have no idea where to go and what to do.
Instructions
Step 1
First of all, remember the signs that will help you determine the cardinal points without the help of a compass, which you may not have at hand. It is a fact that in summer the sun is at 7 am in the east, at 1 pm in the south and at 7 pm in the west. Therefore, on a sunny day, if you have a watch with you, you can determine the direction you should go. In any case, from about 10 to 17 hours the sun will be south of you, not north.
Step 2
If you're heading into the woods on a cloudy, cloudy day, other signs will help you navigate. The sun heats up the southern side of trees, hills and other objects more. For example, moss on a stone only grows on the north side. Look at the birch bark: on the south side, its bark is always whiter and cleaner than on the north. The branches of a freestanding tree are denser and longer on the south side. Lichens and mosses grow on the north side of the trunk.
Step 3
If you see a stump in the forest, pay attention to the location of the growth rings on the cut: to the north, the distance between the rings is less than on the south side of the stump.
Step 4
An anthill located by a tree or stone is located to the south of it. In a detached anthill, the south side is flatter, and the north is steeper.
Step 5
If you get lost in the forest in winter, follow the same general rule: the south side is warmed up by the sun more, so, for example, snow melts south of a tree or stone faster.
Step 6
The sounds of the railway, highways, the noise of the bay will also help you navigate the forest. Barking of dogs means that somewhere relatively nearby there is most likely a settlement.
